"bridging natural science, social science, humanities and engineering."
"...Today, complexity is a word that is much in fashion. We have learned very well that many of the systems that we are trying to deal with in our contemporary science and engineering are very complex indeed. They are so complex that it is not obvious that the powerful tricks and procedures that served us for four centuries or more in the development of modern science and engineering will enable us to understand and deal with them. We are learning that we need a science of complex systems, and we are beginning to construct it..." Nobel Laureate Herbert A. Simon Keynote Speech, 2000 IDPT Conference
A few words about the ATLAS
Founded in 2000, the ATLAS is a non-profit organization providing services to students around the world. The ATLAS provides the following critical services:
- Transdisciplinary education and research,
- Support social, environmental, economical and ethical sustainable development throughout the world, and
- To promote global information exchange through innovative publishing
Social ecological systems currently face complex challenges such as, the degradation of ecosystems, over exploitation of natural resources, climate change, wealth inequalities, and human conflicts. These interconnected challenges are threatening the sustainable development of society and cannot be adequately tackled from the content of specific individual disciplines. This complexity and diversity in the world requires insight, knowledge, skills, and approaches from many field that cross the boundaries of disciplines and institutions, cultures and realities of society. Transdisciplinarity is a growing field of education and research that holds great potential to make an important contribution to a sustainable development.
Goal
The goal of ATLAS is to develop new transdisciplinary research frameworks and strategies with a strong focus on joint efforts by researchers from diverse disciplines to contribute to the co-design of a global sustainable future.
Objectives
To take leadership in developing the fundamentals of the transdiscipline; To provide leadership in the development of new models of learning and innovative teaching environments to complement transdisciplinary curricula; To foster global perspectives on education, research and training activities; To provide a forum for improving the links between science, technology, and the arts by fostering research and educational collaborations among the nations; Enlighten the World with Hope for Green Engineering and Science; To Inspire Global Peace and; To promote global information exchange through innovative publishing.
