Dr. Atila Ertas -- Bio -- fellow

Dr. A. Ertas, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, received his master's and Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He had 12 years of industrial experience prior to pursuing graduate studies. Dr. A. Ertas has been the driving force behind the conception and development of the transdisciplinary model for education and research. His pioneering efforts in transdisciplinary research and education have been recognized internationally by several awards. He is a Senior Research Fellow of the ICC Institute at the University of Texas Austin, a Fellow of ASME, a Fellow of Society for Design and Process Science (SDPS), and a founding Fellow of ATLAS. He is also an honorary member of the International Center for Transdisciplinary Research (CIRET), France.

Dr. Ertas has earned both national and international reputation in engineering design. Dr. Ertas published 4 books (A. Ertas, and J. C. Jones, The Engineering Design Process, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, first edition 1993, and second addition 1996; A. Ertas, Prevention through Design (PtD): Transdisciplinary Process, (Funding for this research was provided by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), 2010; A. Ertas, Engineering Mechanics and Design Applications: Transdisciplinary Engineering Fundamentals, Taylor & Francis, CRC Press, 2011; A. Ertas (Editor), Transdisciplinarity: Bridging Natural Science, Social Science, Humanities & Engineering, TheATLAS Publications, 2011,  and edited more than 35 conference proceedings. He has also organized more than 30 international conferences within ASME, IEEE, SDPS, and ATLAS.

Dr. Ertas' contributions to teaching and research have been recognized by numerous honors and awards. The honors and awards include President's Excellence in Teaching; Pi Tau Sigma Best Professor Award; Pi Tau Sigma Outstanding Teaching Award; Halliburton Award in recognition of outstanding achievement and professionalism in education and research; College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award; George T. and Gladys Hanger Abell Faculty Award for overall excellence in teaching and research; and President's Academic Achievement Award. He also received the most prestigious SDPS George Kozmetsky Distinguished Achievement Award and Excellence in Leadership Award. Most recently, he was recognized as one of the distinguished former students of Texas A&M, Mechanical Engineering Department. In January 2012 Dr. Ertas received the ATLAS-Academy Gold Medal of Honor Award. He has published over 150 scientific papers that cover many engineering technical fields. He has been PI or Co-PI on over 40 funded research projects. Under his supervision, more than 170 MS and Ph.D. graduate students have received degrees.

Bob Block -- Bio

Block is a Founder and a Managing Partner of LiTricity, a shareholder and Board member of USCL and the Co-Chair of the Advanced Technology Policy Committee of the National Energy Marketers Association. Mr. Block has extensive experience in the computer software, communication, energy and entertainment industries including pioneering roles in commercial and pay television and cellular telephone operating companies. He has also contributed significantly to the creation and development of entertainment and communication technologies used worldwide. Block is widely known for his pioneering work in communications, information and management technologies.

He is the inventor and patent owner of more than 150 issued US and International patents, including patents relating to: Enterprise Management Systems, Information Labeling, Signal Control, Terrestrial and Satellite Distribution Systems, Real-Time Subscriber Billing Systems, Pay-Per-View, Parental Control and English Language Education. Block has multiple patent applications pending, including patents relating to interoperability of non-compatible radios, power metering and solar energy systems. Block™ inventions are licensed to most of the major consumer electronics manufacturers and have influenced entertainment, sports, and information and education services worldwide.

 

Dr. Gunay Anlas -- Bio

Professor Anlas is the chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Vice President for Industrial Relations at the Bogazici University. He is the founder ( 2003 ) and previous director ( 2003-2004 ) of Automotive Engineering Program at this university. He has served as the associate provost in charge of international programs of the university between 2001-2004. He obtained his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Turkey in 1985; his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, from University of Delaware in 1992. His current research interests are in the area of fracture mechanics of FGMs and Shape Memory Alloys. He is also working on automotive engineering projects in collaboration with Turkish Automotive Industry.

Dr. Jack Thomas Trevors -- Bio

Jack Thomas Trevors is Professor of Microbiology and Environmental Biology in the Department of Environmental Biology at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Professor Trevors is an internationally recognized scientist and researcher elected to European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Fellow of the following organizations: the American Academy of Microbiology, The Linnean Society, World Academy of Arts and Sciences, World Innovation Foundation and The Institute of Biology of the UK. He is also an Academic and Research Microbiologist (ARMCCM) of the Canadian College of Microbiology.

He is also Member of European Federation of Biotechnology, Member of Denitrification RCN (Research Coordination Network) National Science Foundation, USA, Member of NSERC Strategic Bioconversion Network, and Member of Biomed Experts Network.

Professor Trevors is an editor of The Journal of Microbiological Methods and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. He is also the Editor-in-chief of Water, Air and Soil Pollution, Water, Air and Soil Pollution:FOCUS and co-editor in-chief of The Environmentalist and The Environmental Pollution Book Series. His research includes the origin of genetic instructions, gene transfer in bacteria, soil bioremediation, gene expression in soil, pathogens in the environment, cytoplasmic membrane polarization in bacteria and applications of molecular and biophysical methods in soil bacteriology He is co-author of 5 books, more than 30 book chapters and more than 300 technical papers.

 

Dr. Fuad Gattaz Sobrinho -- Bio

Dr. Fuad G. Sobrinho is a former Executive Director of EMBRAPA, Distinguished Professor at University of Dortmund, Distinguished Research Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is the SDPS fellow and the founder of P3 Technology. Dr. Sobrinho received his PhD in Computer Science and Management Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland in 1984.

Dr. Sobrinho is the founder and has been served the Secretary Executive of Board of Directors of International Institute on Systems Integration - IIISis, Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1993-2002.

 

Dr. Ibrahim Esat -- Bio

Prof. I. I. Esat has received his BSc honours degree from Queen Mary College of London University in 1973 and his PhD research degree from the same university in 1977. He worked in University College of London and Newcastle university as a research fellow, returning to Cyprus as the head of Mechanical Engineering Department of Eastern Mediterranean University for a short time before joining to the Dunlop as the principal engineer. In 1984, he moved back to Queen Mary College as a lecturer; while he was teaching he continued studying part time gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and an MBA. Finally he moved to Brunel University as a Reader and later gained full Professorship.

Prof Esat has a wide ranging research interest and since 1984 he has been heading a research group size of which fluctuated between 10 and 30 researchers. During the last 17 years he has supervised research in the areas of solid modeling, solid mechanics, CAD/CAM, dynamics, vibration, signal processing, neural networks, optimisation and graduated 24 PhD students and published over 200 reviewed technical papers. He has received a number of international awards from ASME and SDPS. He is a fellow of SDPS. He is the sole author of a major software package used in industry, particularly in vibration isolation. His collaborative work with industry also includes biomechanics and medical engineering projects such as novel hip and spinal implants.

 

Dr. Yunus Cengel -- Bio

Yunus Cengel is the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Adnan Menderes University ADU in Aydin, Turkey, and Professor Emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. He received his Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering in 1984 from North Carolina State University in USA. Before joining ADU in 2012, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Yildiz Technical University YTU and as Advisor to President at Scientific and Technological Research Council TUBITAK. Prior to returning Turkey, he served as a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno UNR for 18 years and as the director of the Industrial Assessment Center at UNR for several years. He also served as the advisor to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Ministry of National Education in Turkey on energy efficiency, energy policies, and education reform.

Professor Cengel is the author or coauthor of the widely adopted textbooks Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach, Fundamentals of Thermal-Fluid Sciences, Heat and Mass Transfer: Fundamentals and Applications, Fluid Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications, Introduction to Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, and Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers all published by McGraw-Hill. Some of his textbooks have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, and French. He is the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, and he has received the ASEE Meriam/Wiley Distinguished Author Award twice. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nevada.

 

Dr. S. S. Iyengar -- Bio

Dr. S. S. Iyengar member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts, Director and Ryder Professor at Florida International University's School of Computing and Information Sciences in Miami, FLorida, is a leading researcher in the fields of distributed sensor networks, computational robotics, and oceanographic applications, and is perhaps best known for introducing novel data structures and algorithmic techniques for large scale computations in sensor technologies and image processing applications. Sundaraja Sitharama Iyengar is currently the Director and Ryder Professor at Florida International University's School of Computing and Information Sciences in Miami, FL. Previously, he was the Roy Paul Daniels Professor and Chairman of the Computer Science Department at Louisiana State University. During his tenure at LSU he lead the Wireless Sensor Networks Laboratory and the Robotics Research Laboratory. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1974 from Mississippi State University, Professor Iyengar has directed over 42 Ph.D. students and 100 Masters students, many of whom are now either faculty at major universities worldwide or scientists and engineers at National Labs/Industries around the world. He has published more than 400 research papers and has authored or co-authored eight textbooks and edited 10 others.

Dr. Iyengar's cutting edge research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Multi-University Research Initiative (MURI Program), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Department of Energy / Oak Ridge National Laboratory (DOE/ORNL), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the US Army Research Office (URO) as well as various state agencies and companies. Dr. Iyengar has served on US National Science Foundation and National Institute of Health Panels to review proposals in various aspects of Computational Science and has been involved as an external evaluator (ABET-accreditation) for several Computer Science and Engineering Departments across the United States.

Furthermore, Professor Iyengar is the founding Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks and has been an Associate Editor for IEEE Transaction on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Data and Knowledge Engineering, and guest Editor of IEEE Computer Magazine. He has also edited many IEEE journals through advisory roles.

 

Dr. Allam Appa Rao -- Bio

Dr. Allam Appa Rao is the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada, India He has been a Pro-fessor from the year 1985. He started his career in computing field in the year 1969. He had his early training in computers from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, and ICTP, Trieste, Italy. He obtained his Ph.D. degree for his work in Studies on Computer Performance Evaluation. He has devoted himself to promoting computerization in India in all his endeavors for the last three decades.

Dr . Rao proposed new computing methods, and showed the way to better treatments of disease and better understanding of healthy life. Perhaps even more intriguing, his work may enable the design of entirely novel systems that could prove useful in applications ranging from medicines to environmental cleanup and more. Dr. Rao holds two patents as a co inventor for Method(s) of stabilizing and potentiating the actions and administration of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Dr. Allam Appa Rao has published extensively and received numerous awards for his research work and teaching.

 

Dr. Hans Dieleman -- Bio

Dr. Hans Dieleman is of Dutch/Flamish origin and works as a full professor in the College of Sciences and Humanities of the Autonomous University of Mexico City. Previously he worked in the Center of Environmental Studies of the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands, that he combined for several years with coordinating a European-wide Master program in Environmental Management of the European Association of Environmental Management Education (secretariat in Varese, Italy). He also worked as an invited professor in the Dauphine University in Paris, France and as a visiting professor in the Metropolitan University of Mexico City. He was a member of the academic team that prepared the Doctoral Program in Transdisciplinary Studies of the University Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico.

He is a member of the Interuniversity Research Program on Climate Change (PINCC), initiated by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a member of the Mexican National Network of Researchers in Social-Cultural Studies of Emotions (RENISCE), equally initiated by the UNAM; a member of the National System of Researchers of the Mexican Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), a fellow of TheAtlas and a member of the European Sociological Association.

He is a co-founder and honorary member of the international NGO Cultura21 specialized in ˜cultures of sustainability", with offices in Germany, Denmark, France and Mexico. He co-received two national Dutch distinctions for his work in Education for Sustainability and is a co-receiver of a 2010 national Mexican distinction for the development of the Sustainability Plan for the Metropolitan University of Mexico City.
